Christiana Blue Hole & Waterfall, Jamaica | Directions and Overview

What & Where is Christiana Blue Hole & Waterfall?

Christiana Blue Hole otherwise know as Christiana Bottom Blue Hole, is a waterfall & pool located on the parish boundary of Manchester & Clarendon, Jamaica. The approximate elevation of this waterfall is 740m above sea level.

The rocks that make up the river bed are volcanic in nature (potentially Basalt/Basalt-Andesite). From a geologic standpoint, this waterfall is interpreted by the author as a very old waterfall (based on Jamaica’s geologic history).  

    The depth of the waterfall itself is relatively short. However, the pool formed as can be seen in the images & videos herein (to say the least) appear to be relatively deep. The author was unable to acquire the precise depth of the pool.

Directions to Christiana Blue Hole & Waterfall–From Christiana Town

Once you have followed your map to the secondary road(s) within Christiana (Manchester, Jamaica), getting to the waterfall relative to more patronized waterfalls in Jamaica (such as Dunn’s River Falls & YS Falls) is not so straight forward.   There are no direct roads and/or signs with directions, that will lead you to this waterfall.

  You will have to brave the:

• landslides (minor).
• Downed trees & bamboo.
• Narrow foot paths.
• Pesky insects such as mosquitos.

 

Depending on the path(s) you take, you will also have to navigate your way through adjacent Yam Farms & Livestock, such as the Jamaica Red Cattle. You also have to anticipate making a wrong turn while on your descent to the waterfall, and your ascent from the waterfall.

  You will have to cross the river to access the waterfall.

Hiking Gear Recommendations’

  Long Pants You more than likely will encounter knee-height shrubs & prickly plants. Long pants will help to reduce the likelihood of scratches to your skin. Similarly, long pants will help to ward off parasitic insects such as mosquitoes & ticks.   Tall Socks These will help to ward off insect bites around your ankles.   Hiking Boots The grip and ankle support of these boots is best suited for the terrain & slippery surface(s).   Hiking Cane  This will help to anchor you through your ascent & descent to the waterfall.   Hiking Hat (Broad, hard hat, cap) This will provide you with shelter, and mitigate against small insects and non-living matter from entangling in your head.   Hiking Bag To house your hiking essentials such as food, hydration, electronic device(s), first aid kit & more. Waterproof Bag To house your electronics, map(s), clothing and more.   Eye Protectors (Sunglasses). With you having to navigate your way through branches of downed trees, eye protectors are suitable.   Machete You may have to chop your way through a blockage (branch, foliage).   Map(s) When you’re traversing  the valley floor/river bed you may not have Google Maps access on your phone, and/or GPS access on your GPS device. This is where having access to physical maps is priceless.   First Aid Kit & Equipment  In the event of injury such as a sprained ankle, bump on head and/or scratch that results in broken skin, First aid kit and its equipment will become necessary. Similarly, ensure you walk with your insect repellant.

Safety Considerations

As a safety consideration, if you see the river in flood with the desire of getting to the section with the waterfall, do not cross it. Likewise, should you experience rainfall while descending to and while at the waterfall, you should abort your visit. You should also factor the duration of time it will take you to reach the waterfall & return to your vehicle/mode of transport. Without a guide, it can take you 15-20 minutes (one way and without wrong turns). Because of these considerable factors alone, it’s highly recommended that you visit this waterfall during high sun angle parts of the day (10am-4pm EST). Refrain from drinking the water, or swallowing the water should you decide to take a swim. Considering the numerous farms & residences that encircle the river/tributaries leading to this waterfall, it is likely that pollutants (farm pesticides, detergents…) can seep into the water table. Visiting this waterfall alone/without a partner (social or intimate) is highly discouraged.  

Visiting & Accessing the Christiana Blue Hole & Waterfall is Worth It

Should you decide to embark on the adventurous trip of visiting & accessing the Christiana Blue Hole & Waterfall, it will be worth it. The ‘challenging’ descent makes your visual experience of the waterfall one that can be likened to the visual pleasures of finding a treasure chest, filled with gold & other jewels.
